You will learn about the history and evolution of pyramid building, providing you with a deeper understanding of this ancient civilization. We will then explore the sprawling Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, which houses the famous Tutankhamun display, among other treasures. The following day is free for you to explore independently, relax in your hotel, or take an additional tour. You may opt to take a city tour to the Citadel, Coptic Cairo, and the Khan-el-Khalili bazaar, a day trip to the colonial Mediterranean city of Alexandria, or a tour to see more pyramids at Dashour, Saqqara, and Memphis. After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we will have a brief pre-tour briefing before embarking on our tour of Giza and Saqqara. Giza, built around 4600 years ago as a necropolis for the pharaoh Khufu (Cheops), is a remarkable site that draws visitors from all over the world. Khufu was known for his tyranny and arrogance, and he decided to have a tomb constructed that was bigger and better than all others. The Pyramid of Khufu stands at an impressive 500 feet high and 750 feet at its base, constructed of giant blocks of stone covered in a hard limestone casing. Over the years, the casing has been stripped away, leaving the inner block structure exposed. The smaller pyramids of Khafre (Chephern) and Menkaure (Mycerinus) are also located in Giza, and together with the Pyramid of Khufu, they create a majestic sight rising out of the desert. During our visit, you will have the opportunity to climb inside one of the pyramids (subject to limited availability), as well as take a camel ride. The mysterious Sphinx stands guard nearby, as it has done for thousands of years. We will have a guided tour around the Sphinx and some free time to walk around and take photos. We will then head into the city to visit the Egyptian Museum, which houses a vast collection of artifacts from Egypt's past, including the famous King Tutankhamun display. The museum is a treasure trove of history and culture, with exhibits ranging from ancient mummies to intricate jewelry and artwork. Our guided tour of the museum will provide you with a deeper understanding of Egypt's rich and diverse cultural heritage, and you will have ample time to explore the exhibits independently. By the end of this tour, you will have gained a newfound appreciation for the wonders of ancient Egypt, and you will have memories that will last a lifetime. Cairo's history dates back thousands of years, and while the city has seen many changes over time, it remains a vital hub of culture and commerce in Egypt. The city was founded in 969 AD by Gohar, a Fatimid army leader, and soon became the capital of Egypt. Additional structures like the El Azhar mosque, the Islamic University, and defensive walls and a citadel built by Saladin in 1179 have helped Cairo maintain its prominence. In the 19th century, the reign of Ismail (1830-1895) ushered in a new period of expansion and modernization in Cairo. Areas like Heliopolis, Dokki, and Roda were added, while gardens, opera houses, large hotels, and wide, tree-lined avenues were constructed. Further post-revolutionary urban expansion has left Cairo as one of the world's largest cities. Today, it is a bustling metropolis, a unique blend of diverse cultures, and a gateway to Egypt's past. You will have a free day in the city today to either relax in your hotel, explore independently, or take an optional tour. The tours available include a day trip to the colonial city of Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast, a half-day tour in Cairo to the Citadel, the narrow streets and churches of Coptic Cairo, and the Khan al Khalili bazaar, a half-day tour in Cairo to learn more about the history of pyramidbuilding by visiting pyramids and other ancient sites at Saqqara, Memphis, and Dashour, a dinner cruise on the River Nile with a multi-course buffet meal, and a spectacular Sound and Light show at the Pyramids in the evening. These tours can be booked in advance or arranged while you are in Cairo, providing you with the flexibility to customize your experience. No matter how you choose to spend your day in Cairo, you will be immersed in a vibrant atmosphere that blends the old and the new, the traditional and the modern. Whether you choose to explore the city's many historical landmarks or simply relax and take in the bustling energy of the streets, your time in Cairo will be a memorable experience that you will treasure for years to come.
