About this tour

If you’re short on time or have already explored other parts of Egypt, our short Cairo city break tour is perfect for giving you a taste of the bustling capital city, home to iconic landmarks like the Pyramids, Sphinx, and Egyptian Museum. Throughout your stay, you’ll be accommodated at the award-winning Le Riad Hotel de Charme, a luxurious boutique hotel located in the heart of Old Cairo, facing the famous Beit el Sehemy with its exceptional old Ottoman houses. The hotel’s design celebrates and reflects Old Cairo’s style and history, with each of the 17 suites individually furnished with warm colors, Fatimid fabrics, antique wooden furniture, and paintings from local artists. The suites are spacious and comfortable, featuring large marble bathrooms, separate lounge and study areas, and a variety of different arts and crafts on display. The tour begins with a guided sightseeing tour of Egypt’s most well-known landmark, the Great Pyramids of Giza and the enigmatic Sphinx, where your Egyptologist guide will explain the history and evolution of pyramid building. The rest of your time in Cairo is free for you to explore independently, relax in your hotel, or take an additional tour. Options include a city tour of the Citadel, Coptic Cairo, and the Egyptian Museum; a walking tour through the old streets around the hotel and the Khan-el-Khalili bazaar; a day trip to the colonial Mediterranean city of Alexandria; or a tour to see more pyramids at Dashour, Saqqara, and Memphis. Additionally, dinner cruises and felucca trips on the Nile are available. For those seeking to see more of Egypt, an overnight trip to the ancient Egyptian sites on both banks of the River Nile at Luxor is also available. If you wish to extend your stay in Cairo, extra nights can be added to your tour.

Itinerary

After arriving at Cairo airport, we'll be there to greet you and assist with visa formalities and luggage collection. You'll then be transferred to your luxurious boutique hotel located in the heart of Old Cairo. Once you've settled into your suite, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy at your leisure. If your flight arrives early, you could take advantage of the time and catch a glimpse of the pyramids at the spectacular sound and light show, or explore the nearby El Moez Street.
Overnight: Cairo boutique hotel

Your Egyptian journey begins with a relaxing breakfast in the hotel this morning. During the morning, our local representative will give you a briefing on the hotel and your location in Old Cairo, along with some tips on exploring the area. We'll also discuss any additional optional tours you may have pre-booked or wish to arrange during your stay. Early in the afternoon, we'll embark on a sightseeing tour for a first taste of ancient Egypt, beginning with a visit to the enigmatic Sphinx and the three greatest pyramids in Egypt. The Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops) is a breathtaking man-made structure, towering at 500 feet high and 750 feet wide at its base. Built from enormous stone blocks with a white limestone covering, the limestone has been stripped away over the years to expose the inner block structure. Along with the smaller pyramids of Khafre (Chephern) and Menkaure (Mycerinus), the sight of these huge structures looming out of the desert is unforgettable. One of our specialist Egyptologist guides will accompany you and explain the history of pyramid building and the different dynasties of the ancient Egyptian empire. If you wish, you'll have the opportunity to climb down inside the pyramids, but please note that you'll be on your own, as your guide cannot accompany you (a limited number of tickets are available for the Great Pyramid). After visiting the pyramids, we'll head to the nearby Sphinx, which was only properly uncovered from the desert sands in the last century. Finally, we'll return to our hotel and experience local Egyptian life as El Moez Street comes alive with a relaxed yet exciting energy in the evenings.

You'll have the next two days to explore independently or participate in more guided sightseeing. The area of Old Islamic Cairo surrounding your hotel is one of the city's most charming, featuring covered markets, narrow streets, old buildings, and mosques. This quarter most evokes Cairo's past and has changed very little over time. It has inspired many writings, from Arabian Nights to the works of the modern Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz. Getting lost amongst the winding alleys while walking from the hotel to the nearby Khan-el-Khalili bazaar is a delightful experience. If you'd like some guidance, a guided walking tour is available to help you make the most of your surroundings and explore the various bazaars, markets, and architectures around you. Other optional tours include a City Tour to the Citadel, with its great views over the city; the tiny streets and churches of Coptic Cairo; and the famous Egyptian Museum, home to the impressive Tutankhamun display. Additionally, you could take a trip to learn more about the history of pyramid building at Memphis, Saqqara, and Dashour, or enjoy a full day trip to the colonial coastal city of Alexandria. Furthermore, you may choose to take a flight to the Nile-side city of Luxor in Upper Egypt, which is home to a vast number and variety of ancient Egyptian temples, tombs, and other sites. This overnight trip includes a tour of Karnak Temple on the East Bank of the Nile, as well as the Valley of the Kings, Queen Hatshepsut Temple, and the Valley of the Artisans on the West Bank. You'll spend a night in a 5-star hotel by the Nile before flying back to Cairo. This is an excellent opportunity to delve deeper into ancient Egyptian history and witness some of the most impressive archaeological wonders in the world.
