About this tour

This 9-day Egypt tour is a special opportunity to explore Cairo, Aswan, and Luxor, and is perfectly timed to coincide with the Sun Festival at the temples of Abu Simbel, which takes place twice a year. Egypt is home to a wealth of ancient monuments from the Pharaonic era, and one of the most important and impressive is the temple to Ramses II at Abu Simbel. Ramses II was a celebrated Pharaoh who built temples all over Egypt, and the temples in Abu Simbel are particularly fascinating because they were constructed by cutting and tunnelling into a rock cliff-face, rather than using blocks and columns. The main entrance tunnel features four statues at its end, and the temple was carefully designed so that twice a year, on the dates of Ramses’ ascension to the throne and his birthday, the rising sun shines directly into the tunnel and illuminates only three of the statues, leaving the fourth, dedicated to Ptah, the god of Darkness, in shadow. When the Aswan Dam was built and Lake Nasser was flooded, the temples were below the planned water line, and a massive project was undertaken to dismantle and rebuild them higher up, preserving the alignment of the tunnel so that the rising sun still shines in on the 22nd of October and 22nd of February each year. Our tour begins in Cairo, where we visit the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx before heading to Aswan to explore the island temple of Philae and the Aswan Dam. The next morning, our Egyptologist tour guide will accompany us on an early morning journey to Abu Simbel to witness the sunrise. While it can be busy, the experience is typically well-organized, allowing everyone a chance to go inside and see the statues in the morning sunlight. After this extraordinary experience, we’ll return to Aswan and board a traditional Nile felucca for a relaxing cruise down the river towards Luxor in the Nile Valley. Our facilities boat, which includes an on-board toilet, showers, and a massage deck, will provide support along the way. Alternatively, you may choose to upgrade to an extra night in Aswan’s hotel if you prefer. After spending a night on the felucca, we’ll drive north to Luxor, stopping to see the temple at Edfu along the way. Once we arrive in Luxor, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the impressive temple complex at Karnak, venture into the tombs of the Valley of the Kings, and visit Queen Hatshepsut’s temple. You’ll also have some free time to walk through the markets and relax by the hotel pool before we head back to Cairo. If you’re interested in extending your trip to the Red Sea, please contact us for details, as extensions are easily arranged from Luxor to Hurghada, and then back to Cairo.

Itinerary

As soon as you arrive, our friendly staff will be at the airport to greet you and assist you in obtaining your visa and collecting your luggage. From there, we'll transfer you to your hotel to begin your trip. Our staff will help you settle in, acquaint you with the local area, and provide you with a detailed explanation of tomorrow's schedule.
The remainder of the day will be yours to do as you please. If you arrive early, you may wish to take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy an evening dinner cruise on the Nile or witness the spectacular sound and light show at the pyramids. Both of these activities can be easily booked locally upon your arrival.
Whatever you choose to do, we hope that you'll take the time to relax and settle in before embarking on the exciting adventure that awaits you in Egypt.
Overnight: Cairo hotel

Our Egyptian adventure commences with a visit to the Egyptian Museum located in the heart of Cairo. The museum is home to numerous ancient Egyptian artifacts, including the incredible Tutankhamun exhibit. Accompanying you on this and all other sightseeing tours will be one of our local Egyptologist guides, who are passionate about the history of their country and eager to share their knowledge with you.
After the museum, we'll head to Giza on the outskirts of Cairo to witness one of the most awe-inspiring sights in the world - the Sphinx and the three great pyramids of Egypt. The Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops), which stands at 500 feet high and has a base of 750 feet wide, is an incredible feat of engineering, constructed from giant stone blocks with a hard limestone casing. Over the years, the casing has been stripped away, revealing the inner block structure. Along with the smaller pyramids of Khafre (Chephern) and Menkaure (Mycerinus), these monumental structures rising out of the desert are a breathtaking spectacle. You'll have the opportunity to climb down inside the pyramids if you wish, although your guide cannot accompany you. Please note that a limited number of tickets are available for the Great Pyramid.
In the evening, we'll transfer to the station to board the overnight sleeper train to Aswan, which takes approximately nine hours. While aboard the train, you can relax in your comfortable cabin and get some rest before the next exciting leg of our journey.
Overnight: On board train
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

We'll begin our day by arriving in Aswan, where we'll transfer to our hotel that boasts a magnificent view of the Nile. This region of the Nile is particularly picturesque, with lush green islands, and feluccas sailing to and fro, creating a tranquil and idyllic atmosphere. Aswan is a unique blend of African and Middle Eastern cultures, which can be best experienced by strolling through the busy markets and absorbing the lively atmosphere.
In the afternoon, we'll embark on a boat trip to visit the stunning Philae Temple, an island complex built in honor of the goddess Isis. We'll also explore the massive Aswan Dam, a remarkable feat of engineering that has played a significant role in the development of this region of Egypt. After the tour, we'll return to the hotel where you'll have the rest of the day to spend at your leisure. The evening is an ideal time to explore Aswan's spice and general markets and take a stroll along the popular Corniche, which runs along the banks of the Nile.
For those seeking an extra adventure, you may want to consider taking a camel ride through the sands on the far bank of the Nile to St. Simeon's Monastery, which is an optional activity available to you. Regardless of how you choose to spend your day, we hope that you'll enjoy the unique and vibrant atmosphere of Aswan, and take in all the wonders this fascinating city has to offer.
Overnight: Aswan hotel
Meals: Breakfast

Aswan is situated in the ancient region of Nubia, which once included parts of present-day southern Egypt and northern Sudan along the Nile River. The Nubian people have a rich and fascinating history, and many of their descendants still reside in this area today. During our tour, we'll visit a local Nubian village to see their vibrant and colorful homes, learn about their simple way of life, and enjoy a traditional lunch. We'll also explore the Nubian Museum, which provides a wealth of information about the Nubian people and their culture.
Our next stop is the site of the Unfinished Obelisk, where we'll gain insight into the process of excavating these massive stone columns. This fascinating site offers an opportunity to learn about the ancient techniques used to create these impressive structures.
In preparation for our early morning start tomorrow, we recommend heading to bed early tonight. We'll embark on an exciting journey to Abu Simbel, and you won't want to miss a thing.
Overnight: Aswan hotel
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Today, we'll depart from Aswan in the early morning, and take a drive of approximately three hours to reach the UNESCO world heritage site at Abu Simbel. These magnificent temples, built by Ramses II, are among Egypt's most famous and impressive attractions. Upon arrival, our Egyptologist guide will provide us with historical explanations before we enter the temple at sunrise, where we'll witness how three out of the four statues at the end of the tunnel are illuminated, while the fourth, dedicated to Ptah, the god of Darkness, remains in shadow. It's worth noting that Abu Simbel can be quite crowded on this day, so expect a somewhat procession-like experience.
After returning to Aswan, we'll board a traditional Nile felucca after lunchtime to embark on a leisurely sail down the Nile. This activity is one of the most enjoyable experiences Egypt has to offer, as you'll get to observe local rural Egyptian life passing you by on the banks of the river while you drift along. Our Nubian crew will sail the boat and entertain us along the way, as well as preparing delicious meals. Our separate facilities boat will join us from time to time during the day and moor up with us at night. This boat includes a hygienic kitchen, a welcome toilet, and showers, where the crew will also prepare a scrumptious evening meal. For the night, we'll sleep on the deck of the boat, with mattresses, blankets, and mosquito netsprovided.
If you'd prefer, you have the option to upgrade this felucca sailboat trip to an additional night in the Aswan hotel. If you choose this option, you'll spend tonight in Aswan and re-join the group tomorrow morning as we begin our journey to Luxor. All other touring activities remain the same, and you won't miss out on any of the exciting experiences that await us in Luxor.
Overnight: On board felucca
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After enjoying a hearty breakfast, it's time to bid farewell to the felucca and set off northwards to visit the remarkably well-preserved temple at Edfu, which is arguably the best-preserved temple in all of Egypt. We'll then continue our journey to Luxor, which is situated in and around the ancient site of Thebes. This location is home to the largest collection of ancient ruins in the Nile Valley, and possibly the world. The west houses the City of the Dead, along with Mortuary Temples and rocky tombs, while the east is home to the Temples of Luxor and Karnak.
In the evening, we'll embark on a walking tour of the smaller Luxor Temple, which is located right in the heart of the town and is beautifully illuminated at night. This is a fantastic opportunity to witness the temple's grandeur and beauty in a unique and atmospheric way.
Overnight: Luxor hotel
Meals: Breakfast

This morning, we'll cross the Nile River and head towards Luxor's West Bank, where we'll explore the Valley of the Kings, an ancient burial site that is one of the most significant archaeological destinations in the world. We'll discover the pharaonic tombs, Queen Hatshepsut temple, and Deir El-Medina, also known as the Valley of the Artisans. For an additional and optional experience, you can choose to embark on a breathtaking sunrise hot air balloon flight over the West Bank this morning.
In the afternoon, we'll visit the towering Karnak Temple complex, where we'll walk through its enormous pillars, towering columns, massive avenues of sphinxes, and a 97-foot-tall obelisk that weighs 323 tons. This temple, dedicated to the gods Amun, Khous, and Mut, boasts an extensive Hypostyle Hall with 134 towering columns adorned with scenes of gods and pharaohs, as well as hieroglyphic inscriptions engraved on the walls.
Later this evening, we'll transfer to the station to board the overnight sleeper train back to Cairo, which takes approximately nine hours. This train ride will provide a chance to rest and relax before our arrival in Cairo, where we'll have one final day to enjoy the sights and sounds of this incredible city.

Alternatively, a half-day tour to Saqqara, Dashour, and Memphis is available to learn more about the history and evolution of pyramid building. For those interested in exploring further afield, there are full-day options such as visiting the colonial city of Alexandria on the Mediterranean or taking a trip to the World Heritage Site of the Valley of the Whales at Wadi Rayan in the desert outside Cairo.
In the late afternoon, we'll take a guided walk through the backstreets and bazaars in central Cairo. We'll pass through the enormous Bab al-Futuh gateway and explore streets dedicated to metalwork, spices, pottery, fabric, jewelry, and more as we gradually make our way towards the more touristy Khan-el-Khalili bazaar. Along the way, we'll take a break to try some tea and a shisha pipe and perhaps indulge in an early dinner of Egyptian dish, Kushari before returning to our hotel.
